RE: Mackinaw City for the first time...tips?

One thing that is a must. Take a day trip across the bridge to St. Ignace. Drive west on US 2 and keep going until you come across the dunes lining the road. Find a place to park along the road and find ytour spot in the sand on the beach. Take a picnic basket and spend the day. It's like being on the ocean; nice clean water, takes a while to get deep and the kids will love it. It is so relaxing and wonderful. Also down in that area is Mystery Spot.

RE: Michigan U.P. campgrounds

What area do you want and do you want a state park or private. If you want a state park try Mclain State Park in Hancock. It is on the Keweenaw Peninsula and is a beautiful park. On a bluff over looking Lake Superior with stairs down to the water. Fantastic sunsets. When we were there the staff cleaned the bathrooms twice a day in the morning and then again around 3:30. When a camper left the staff came and raked the lot and cleaned the fire pit. I highly recommend this park. Here is a link to some photos from our trip. These were taken in 2005. We went for a day trip to the park last summer and it still seemed the same. Mclain State Park

RE: Camgrounds in Western Michigan along Lake Michigan

As of right now, Ludington State Park and another in the area is closed due to flooding and storm damage. I haven't heard when they will reopen. On edit: Looks like it is just closed for the weekend. Flooding

RE: State Park Observation...Michigan

We only stay at state parks. I have only found one private park that was $20 a night with water/sewer/electric and was really a nice park. Dirt roads but I can live with that, no dust problem. We just got back from Otsego Lake State Park. Camped from May 30 to June 2. Really nice park, large sites clean bathhouses, very large nice beach and a huge lake with great walleye fishing. The park has 155 campsites and maybe eight were being used. I went and checked the website a couple days before leaving and a large amout of sites that were reserved had all been cancelled. I think gas prices will have an effect this year. More people camping closer to home.

RE: Mill Creek, Mackinaw KOA or St. Ignace KOA

Mill Creek is a really nice park but extremely busy. Kids running everywhere so you really have to watch for them and drive very very slow. We almost hit a small child as he darted from behind a bush right next to the road. The pool and game room were over run with kids so we never got to use them. Yes the views are the best around and the lake front sites are arranged like a small subdivision. Very very close sites. The fire pans you must get from the office are little more than oil changing pans and the wood doesn't fit so well. The showers have nothing more than shower curtains between them with little room. When you bend over your butt will touch whoever is in the next "stall." All in all it is a nice park and I would probably stay there again for a weekend but not anytime soon. We stayed in the front of the park where the sites are a bit larger. Here are just a few photos of the park. Mackinac Mill Creek Camping

RE: Anyone cancelling trips due to gas prices?

Yep, no more trips for us. Actually we are putting up the camper for sale this weekend. We've had enough.

RE: lower michigan

Your teens would love Silver Lake State Park. Tons of stuff to do and the dunes are fun. Great for walking on. Here's some pics. Silver Lake Sand Dunes

RE: Favorite Michigan SP?

Yep, Mclain has my vote. Most sites are big and have a lake view. Plus the sunsets are spectacular.

RE: Do you want one of these?

I saw one of these on the TV a couple of months ago. I would love to have one. Would be lots of fun. Just way to pricy for me at the moment though.

Cider Mills

Well it's that time of year again where we get to head out to the ole cider mills. We usually go to several but our favorite is the Franklin Cider Mill in Franklin, MI. It was built as a grist mill in 1873. So does anyone out there go to any cider mills. I expect that the New England area has them and maybe Washington state but how about the other areas. Are there any unusual mills in your area. Inquiring minds want to know. At least I do...hehehe.

Jane Wyman is Gone

She passed away today. I liked watching her movies. She seemed to be a gracious lady. I'm sure she will be missed. (LOS ANGELES) - Jane Wyman an Academy Award, Golden Globe-winning and Emmy-nominated actress has died. Wyman's career spanned several decades. Her most prolific appearances in film came in the 1940s and 1950s, and included her best known film roles in Johnny Belinda and Magnificent Obsession opposite Rock Hudson. Wyman became known to new generations in the 1980s, not only for her leading role as the malevolent matriarch Angela Gioberti Channing on the hit prime-time soap opera Falcon Crest, but also because of her prior marriage to former actor Ronald Reagan, who was then President of the United States. In 1938, Wyman co-starred with Reagan in Brother Rat (1938), and its sequel Brother Rat and a Baby (1940). The two were married (her second or third marriage, and his first) on January 26th, 1940, and divorced on June 28th, 1948. She and Reagan had three children; Maureen Elizabeth Reagan (1941 - 2001), Michael Reagan (adopted, born March 18th, 1945), and Christine Reagan (stillborn June 26th, 1947). Wyman had been living in seclusion for a number of years because of declining health including arthritis and diabetes.

RE: Our beautiful lab is now gone...

I'm sorry for your loss. I recently lost a pet also. It's hard and you will cry a lot. I know, I have. Give your other little fur baby extra love and attention. They know when a friend is gone and they grieve also. You will see a change in her behavior. Just be comforted by knowing she has gone to the Rainbow Bridge and will be there waiting for you. Here is a site that has helped me. Petloss.com The Rainbow Bridge Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

RE: My friend Eric is dying tonight....PASSED

I never know what to say at times like this. Except that I'm so sorry for you losing your friend and for his wife and child. I will say an extra prayer for his family tonight.

My Bestest Little Friend

Skittles. I loved how she would run on the back of the couch where my arm rested. She would put her little head in the crook of my arm and let me scritch her until the wee hours of the morning. She would climb onto my lap and fall asleep until I moved her to her own home place, there she would curl up on her bed and have her sleepy time. I loved how I would be playing on the computer and she would dance across my keyboard changing my words into gibberish and making me laugh at the way she would look up at me on her hind legs as if saying; "Ok time to play with me now." I loved how she would curl up her little blanket on my printer and fall asleep watching me type out words that she didn't understand but always found interesting to watch. As you all know, I had life saving surgery six weeks ago and was in the hospital for six days. My wife said that she would just sit at the top of her cage and stare into my bedroom waiting for me to come out. I did come home and she loved me like she always had but it wasn't quite the same. There was a change, she seemed more distant but she stilled loved her scritchs. She was a big comfort however, sitting with me in my chair and cuddling. Well, Friday night suddenly Skittles decided to take the trip across the rainbow bridge. I gave her the scritches that she eagerly accepted and she just climbed into the palm of my hand and fell asleep and then I felt her heart stop beating. The tumors finally took her from me. My own heart now has a hole the size of Texas in it where she used to be. She is my first rattie I have ever been daddy to and now we are down to one, Scampers. I haven't really stopped crying since Friday night not knowing what I did wrong to have her leave me like this. My heart is truly broken now and I don't think I will be able to get any more ratties. Thank goodness I have Scampers. She has helped me get though this with her playfulness. But it is so hard.
